South Taranaki Halberg Day.
This was held at the Hawera Golf Club on Sunday July 21st
The course was in magnificent order, as was the weather. It was a beautiful sunny day without any wind.
Unfortunately due to a clash with other tournaments, entries were down on previous years. The 64 players enjoyed the day immensely, and our thanks go to Terry Bingham and his band of helpers from the Hawera Golf Club for the work they put in, organising and running the day.
The Men’s Halberg Tankard was won by K.Rees with 42 stableford points on a count back from P.Beaven
The Ladies Halberg Engraved Glasses were won by Sue Goble with 39 stableford points.
Michael Walsh President of the Eagles Golfing Society of Taranaki presented the two Halberg prizes, with all other winners picking their prize from the extensive prize table. Michael also welcomed all participants and thanked them, for their support of the day, which raised around $2000.00 for the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation.
Having only just arrived back in New Zealand from an overseas holiday, National President Myles Murphy extended his apology for being unable to be in attendance, but asked me to pass on his grateful thanks to the organisers and to everyone involved in the day, for their support.
John Sigurdsson, our Regional Sports Advisor, represented the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation and like me did not feature among the prize winners but he did score a two so did not go home empty handed. John also distributed his newsletter which was very informative of his work with the disabled in the various sports with which they are involved.
To end the day we all had a very scary experience, when the large earthquake which struck Wellington at 5.10 shook the Clubhouse which is a two storey structure most violently, and it seemed to go on for ever.
Thankfully there was no damage or injuries, so after another drink I along with everyone else headed for the safety of home.
